Day 62 - Harsh Times

Day 62 and I watched Harsh Times. Harsh Times is about an ex-soldier, played by Christian Bale who is trying to return to a somewhat normal life. He seemed to have grown up in southern California so he's connected and at home in all the gang life. Also evident by the fact that Bale is using a annoying mexican accent through much of the movie. It's so weird to see Batman talking like that, but after a while you forget it. He's got a friend that tags along with him who has a lot going for him without Bale trying to drag him down. I felt really bad for Bale's friend. I knew from reading the description of the movie that they got in to some serious trouble at some point so I was on the edge of my seat with tension for most of the movie. They have no trouble making mistakes either. Everyone does a great job acting, the only gripe I have is Bale's accent. A very good, tense movie, give it a watch.

Day 61 - Garfield's Pet Force

Day 60 and I watched Garfield's Pet Force. Ok, so I picked another really short one but I was a huge fan of Garfield back in grade school, plus it was short and it's brand new on Netflix's instant viewing list. Garfield's Pet Force is about a group of super pets in an alternate dimension. The 3 out of the 4 super pets gets captured and it's up to Garzooka to find some pets with DNA that matches his friends so he can give them super powers. He finds himself in comic land looking for Garfield's friends. This is a computer animated movie and honestly it's not animated all that well. All of the characters have kind of wooden expressions and some of the actual animation is pretty rough. If you're 7 years old you won't notice. This is a children movie after all. I think maybe I've outgrown my Garfield days because there wasn't much that was all that funny in this movie.

Day 60 - A Serious Man

Day 60 and I watched A Serious Man. A Serious Man is about a jewish guy and his troubles with his family and work and his neighbor and everything in between. This is a Coen movie but it seems to be a little lacking to me. It may be because I'm not up to snuff on my jewish culture, and that seems to be who this is really aimed towards. I mean, parts of it are funny, but I kept thinking that jokes were flying over my non-kosher head. You can't help but feel bad for the main character though, he's going through a divorce, his job is in question, some kid is trying to bribe him, his kids seem to be oblivious to everything and keep whining about the television, his neighbor gives him a hard time, he's got a brother or brother-in-law living with him who seems to be a little unstable. He has a lot on his plate and he's looking for help from the church and he's not getting anything. The ending left me hanging as well. If you're jewish you'll probably take more away from this movie than I did.

This gets 2.4 equations out of 5.

Day 59 - Hot Tub Time Machine

Day 59 and I went to the local cinema to watch Hot Tub Time Machine. Hot Tub Time Machine is a tale of 3 middle aged dudes and one 20 something nerdy guy who get transported back to the 80s mysteriously via a Hot Tub Time Machine. John Cussack and a couple other recognizable dudes star in this, Chevy Chase even has a small role and everyone does just fine. At first it may seem a little cliche, especially the nerd 20 something and he sort of is, but it's not annoyingly so. This is a modern style comedy, in the same vein as the Hangover and I can't think of anything else at the moment. It's a tad on the stupid side, I guess, so don't expect it to tickle the part of your funny bone that has a brain. That's not to say its Dude Where's my Car either. It walks the line. Ramble ramble ramble, don't avoid this movie

Day 58 - Up in the Air

Day 58 and I watched Up in the Air. Up in the Air is about a guy played by George Clooney who lives life on the go. His job is to go around and fire people. On the side he also gives motivational speeches about how to life with the bare minimum of attachment. If you like George then this movie will be a treat, he fits the role perfectly. I love George myself so no complaints there. Another aspect that I have to give credit to is the directing or cinematography, I need to look that up but it's really good in this movie. It gives the movie another entertaining part. The wide angles and the way the planes are moving around and plus I just like airports. There's style here, and I appreciate that. The movie has some humorous parts but I don't really remember laughing out loud, its more in the amusing area. I did think this was maybe a little longer than it needed to be, not that it's long but it seemed to meander a little bit.

Day 57 - Charlotte's Web

Day 57 and I watched Charlotte's Web. We all know the story of Charlotte's Web so I won't say much about that end of this movie. This is a fairly recent (2006) retelling of that famous story and its got Dakota Fanning in it, as well as Edgar's wife in Men in Black. This movie is a delight to watch. All the animal's interacting with each other is laugh out loud funny, especially the crows. Wilbur is cute beyond words. The only guy I had a big bone to pick with is Dakota's father, who seems hellbent on getting rid of Wilbur! How can anyone hate poor sweet Wilbur? I can't really level anything against Charlotte's Web this is really a great movie, if you're not above watching a family movie give this a shot. I know this is short but what else can I say?

Day 56 - Dream Cruise

Day 56 and I'm tired so I watched Dream Cruise because it's an hour long, sue me. Dream Cruise is about this guy, Jack, who had a traumatic experience when he was younger that ended up with his friend or brother drowning and he blames himself for it. Jack is, of course, haunted by what seems to be his dead acquaintance. Jack has a client who he has to entertain or something and he's also having some with his client's wife. Jack's client invites both Jack and his wife on a boat trip and things start to become strained and it turns out the client knows of the adultery! Going into this movie, even just seeing Masters or Horror on the cover you have to set your bar pretty low. The main guy, Jack, is played by some actor who is barely acting. There's one scene where he faints because he remembers he has a teeny cut on his leg and its just so bad. The client's wife is pretty awful too. The guy who plays the client isn't horrible though. The middle part of this movie is where you see a slight glimmer on this turd, mainly the part where Jack is wrestling with a hand. Its only good because it's so bad. Especially because the wife, who is dealing with a struggle of her own yells out, "I could use a hand!" Pass on this, unless you like bad horror movies.

Day 55 - Special

Day 55 and I watched Special. Special stars Michael Rapaport as a meter maid who is content with his life. Content as in bored. He doesn't feel like he's really going anywhere or has anything to offer. So he signs up for a clinical test of a new antidepressant and guess what? He now has super powers! At least he thinks he does. He decides he's going to be a super hero and goes around trying to help people. This kind of reminds me of Big Fan in that after a while, you're not really rooting for the main guy, you just feel bad for him. You wish he'd wake up and take some damn advice. The only time I really cared for the guy was when he was getting his ass kicked. Everything is just so-so in this movie. It's kind of an interesting idea but poor execution.

Day 54 - The Men Who Stare at Goats

Day 54 and I watched The Men Who Stare at Goats. This movie has all kinds of good people cast, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey. There's even the bad ass general bad guy from Avatar in here. I haven't meant to, but I got two Kevin Spacey movies in a row and every movie I see him in makes me like him even more. He's a hero. So is George Clooney. This is a movie about some experimental stuff the military did in the psychic and paranormal field. They were trying to create super soldiers with psychic abilities - Jedi Warriors. This is a movie that perhaps is not for everyone. I've only heard of one person I know of that liked this movie. Its got a sense of humor that won't agree with everyone, but I love it. Its got a dry sense of humor I guess. There are a bunch of men who are maybe a little loony but are given legitimacy by the government so they take themselves super seriously and believe that they actually have super powers. If that isn't a little funny to you then you probably shouldn't watch this.

I'm gonna give this 3.9 clouds out of 5

Day 53 - The Usual Suspects

Day 53 and I watched The Usual Suspects. The Usual Suspects is about a bunch of criminals who kind of fall into each other and decide to take on a job. One job turns into another and before you know it they have satan himself mad at them. Not actually satan, but the bad guy crime boss equivalent of satan. This is a pretty good movie, especially if you like crime thrillers. I found myself kind of drifting at parts or feeling lost, as there seems to be a lot of twists and stuff to pay attention to. It was just a slight feeling, so don't get discouraged. I don't really mind feeling as such but some people do, so just know that. Still sick, this review sucks, but this movie surely does not.

Day 52 - A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon

Day 52 and I watched A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon. This movie is about a 17 year old named Jimmy. Beyond that it's kind of hard to nail what this movie is exactly about. It reminds me of Forest Gump that way, only not as good. On one hand Jimmy is chasing this rich girl who won't let him spoil her virginity and trying to prove to her that he's a nice guy, but he goes around screwing everyone else at the same time. On another hand he's trying to scam people out of money so he can run away to Hawaii. His dad really wants him to follow in his own footsteps and go to some local college for business. Everyone in this movie seems to be way smarter than they should be. Jimmy is a hustler, no doubt about that, but also his little sister hustles people at a bowling alley, and she has all the command on the english language of people 3 times her age. I believe this is billed as a comedy but I didn't really find it all that funny. bleh

Day 51 - Lake Mungo

Day 51 and I watched Lake Mungo. Lake Mungo is about a young girl who drowns one day. It's all told in a documentary style which I love. It is fiction but when it's told like a documentary it makes it much more believable. Anyway, she drowns and it seems that her ghost is haunting her family. Things keep happening and twists are added. This is a fairly creepy movie and it kind of reminded me of Paranormal Activity. Sorta. It's similar in the way it's told, through old footage and things like that. I can't exactly remember, I'm not sure now that Paranormal Activity was told as a documentary, I think it was just purely home video. I'm sick, I don't know what I'm talking about. Lake Mungo is an excellent movie though. I usually don't go for Horrorfest-type stuff but this is really well made. The actors are believable and nothing is really out of the ordinary. Except for maybe the cell phone footage at Lake Mungo, I found myself wondering if every single girl in such a large group would be taking video at the same time. That's minor though. Some may find this a little boring or dragging, so if you have ADD you probably won't want to watch it.

I'm gonna give Lake Mungo 4.1 tapes out of 5.

Day 50 - Old Dogs

The big day 50 and I watched Old Dogs. I wish I could have had a bigger and better movie but this is just how it is. Old Dogs is about two best buds who are big time marketing executives. John Travolta and Robin Williams play the two best buds. Travolta is more of an extrovert crazy guy and Rob is kind of a shy guy. One day Rob discovers he has some long lost kids from a previous fling and kind of gets stuck with them for two weeks. They all fall in love and yadda yadda yadda. This is a pretty generic movie. There are parts that are funny but not enough to really put this on any list of movies you must watch. This is a forgettable family movie, that's about it.

Sorry so short, I'm getting sick!

Day 49 - Ninja Assassin

Its day 49 and I watched Ninja Assassin. Ninja Assassin is about ninja assassins. There's these ninja assassins who are trained from very early childhood to be all they can be and be super killers. Our hero, who is named Raizo, was an orphan and the twinkle in the leader's eye and he seems to be the best out of everyone else. He's got a little love interest in there. That's all told in flashbacks and in present time there's some big conspiracy going on with the ninja mob and all kinds of stuff. It's all just a vessel for the action. Which is bloody. Bloody bloodly mcbloody. It's like Ninja Gaiden 2: The Movie. Blood. There's limps flying all over the place, slo-mo glory shots of limbs getting cut off, blood splattering. More Blood. At first its great, blood. But it seems like the first action shots you see are just as intense as the latter ones. BLOOOOOOOOD. The result is that I kind of started getting bored. The action is just as intense, only they maybe start adding a couple more people to the fights. I think they could have shortened it up a bit as well, the story segments seem to drag at parts. This is an action movie, watch it for the BLOOD.

Day 48 - New Moon

Day 48 and I had to watch New Moon due to certain love interests. New Moon is the 2nd in a series of supernatural teenager romance novels and now movies. I'm sure there's no one that will read this that hasn't heard of Twilight and already has an opinion on it. Edward is a sulky too-cool-for-school Richard Simmons sparkly vampire, Bella is some aloof teenage completely enamored with Edward and Jacob is a ripped. I really find Edward annoying and thankfully and mercifully he is not in this movie a whole lot. Instead Jacob takes his place as a major love interest for Bella, and he's a little more charismatic to humans and not so catered to robots as Edward is. As a result this is a lot more enjoyable than Twilight, to me at least. There are some cool shots in this movie, particularly the one with Bella waiting in the window as the seasons pass. The special effects are well done and there seems to be attention paid to subtlety. I can't believe I'm saying this but I somewhat enjoyed this movie. I'm leaving.

Sadly I'm giving this movie 3.5 muffins out of 5.

Day 47 - The Ex

Day 47 and I watched The Ex. The Ex is about a couple who just had a baby! So of course the mom can't work so it's up to her husband to hold down a job. He has a hard time holding down a job because he can smell BS a mile away and tends to call people on it. He gets fired and decides to work for his wife's father. Her dad runs an advertising firm and it's all goofy stuff in there. The "YES BALL" is an imaginary ball that people mime throwing for some reason. He has to swallow his pride and tough it out. That gets harder with a guy named Chip. Chip is so passive aggressive and I love it, it's hilarious. Zach Braff plays the hubby and he does a good job and Amanda Peet is the wifey. This is a pretty funny movie, partly because of the passive aggressiveness of Chip and because everything goes wrong for Zach. I don't want to give too much away, it's a funny movie though. I wouldn't really say this is a romantic comedy, although there is relationship stuff in there, it's hardly the focus. Give it a watch.

I'll give The Ex 3.7 sticky note apologies out of 5.

I really wish I could remember what they called those sticky note apologies!

Day 46 - That Thing You Do

Its day 46 and I watched That Thing You Do. That Thing You Do is a movie about a small time band's rise to stardom. They start with high school talent shows and end up being on TV! It stars a whole bunch of guys and I don't know any of their names. Liv Tyler is in this, as is Tom Hanks who also wrote and directed it. This movie is set in the 1950s so everyone has goofy hair and old awesome cars. This is billed as a comedy but I don't know if I'd really call it that. I'd say it's more of a lighthearted drama movie instead of a comedy. That Thing You Do is a fairly entertaining tale, I would have liked it to be a little more funny but that's not really a bad thing.

I'll give this 3.1 clock radios out of 5.

Sorry guys, I'm really tired.

Day 45 - 48 Hrs.

It's day 45 and I watched 48 Hrs. 48 Hrs stars Nick Nolte as a tough cop and Eddie Murphy as a wisecracking convict. Don't stop me if you've heard this before because apparently this is Eddie's first film! We start the movie with a convict getting freed by one of his jabronie friends. His jabronie friend is none other than Sonny Landham. Doesn't sound familiar? He was Billy in Predator. Isn't it funny that his name is Billy in this movie too? He even pulls out a huge knife at one point. I wonder if that's a nod towards Predator or just coincidence. Anyhow, the two guys kill a couple cops and what not and Nick needs some help so he gets Eddie out of prison for 48 Hrs to help him find these guys. They have a hate-hate relationship. Eddie is awesome and so is Mr. Nolte. This isn't really a comedy, despite Eddie Murphy being in it, although it does have funny parts. A great buddy cop movie, watch it.

Day 44 - Rashomon

Day 44 and I watched Rashomon. Rashomon is about a particular scene of an apparent rape and murder and four different versions of that story. Each of the four people tells it a different way and the movie doesn't tell you how it actually happened. Its an interesting movie that way. It asks "how trustworthy is a man?" On the other hand, this is from 1950 and a such the cinematography is a little dated. I understand that this was quite the movie for it's time so I'll cut it a little slack. I am not from the 1950s however, and it was a little rough on my attention span. The acting is a little overdone and the music was a little cheery for what was going on, it kind of reminded me of a looney tune at times to be honest. The concept of this movie is really the main reason to watch it and I do enjoy a movie that asks the viewer the questions.

I'll give this 3 pearl inlays out of 5

Day 43 - Cobra

Day 43 and I watched Cobra. Cobra is an autobiography, I believe, of Sylvester Stallone's early years as a cop who goes by the name "Cobra." Cobra is one crime annihilating mega dude. He takes the laws into his own hands. . . TO THE XTREME. Other people keep trying to tell him the bad guys have rights or some bologna but he doesn't pay them no mind, he's got his own set of morals. Cobra is a standard awesome action movie. Cobra drives around this old bomber car and the thing could have it's own movie. He uses it to push some cholo's car out of the way, he gets mad of course but he can not harm the Cobramobile. It's too strong. Put Cobra behind the wheel and it's lights out, unless he crashes it into a boat. Nothing short of a boat will stop the Cobramobile. Nothing stops the Cobra.
